How many Google reviews do I need to match local competitors?
There is no fixed number of Google reviews that guarantees a map-pack spot. A practical benchmark is the businesses you actually compete with. MapGap takes the review counts you type for up to five competitors, finds the median, and shows how far you are from it and what monthly pace would close that gap in about 90 days.
The math MapGap uses
- Median of the competitor review counts you entered (competitors with no count are skipped).
- Gap = max(0, median − your reviews).
- Target per 30 days = ceil(gap / 3), spreading the gap over three 30-day periods.
Worked example (example numbers only)
Say you have 40 reviews and five competitors show 35, 60, 82, 110 and 150. The median is 82, the gap is 42, and the target is ceil(42 / 3) = 14 reviews per 30 days. If you also type how many reviews you got in the last 30 days, the worksheet tells you whether that pace meets the target.
Why the median and not the top competitor
One business with a very large count can skew an average. The median of the competitors you picked is a steadier middle benchmark. You choose the competitors, so pick the ones that show up for the searches you care about.
