See which GBP categories are a competitor’s primary
MapGap flags each category you’re missing that a competitor uses as its primary Google Business Profile category, names that competitor, and ranks those categories higher in the list.
What MapGap flags
For each competitor you enter, the primary category is the one you paste in the "Primary category" field. When a competitor's primary category isn't on your own list (primary or additional), MapGap shows it as a missing category and tags it primary for that competitor's name.
- If the same category is primary for more than one competitor, every one of those competitors is named in the tag.
- If a competitor's primary category is already one of your categories, it isn't flagged, because it isn't missing.
- MapGap doesn't separately compare your primary category with theirs or suggest changing your primary. It only lists categories you don't have.
How it affects the ranking
- Missing categories are sorted by how many competitors list them, most first.
- When two categories are used by the same number of competitors, the one that is primary for more competitors ranks higher.
- Remaining ties are sorted A–Z.
Where to find a competitor's primary category
On a Google Business Profile, the category shown under the business name is usually the primary one. You copy it yourself and paste it into the competitor's "Primary category" field. Additional categories go in the box below it, separated by commas or new lines. MapGap doesn't look anything up.
What the free preview shows
- A count of missing categories that are a competitor's primary category.
- The top 2 missing categories in full, including which competitors use them as primary.
- For the rest, only the competitor count and an "a competitor's primary" tag, without the category name, until you buy.
Buying ($9.99 one-time on Whop) unlocks the full ranked list and a CSV that includes a competitor_primary_for column. Already bought? Sign in with Whop in the app.
Hard limits
- Paste-in only. No Google Maps or Places data pull or APIs.
- Matching is exact text, ignoring case. "Plumber" and "Plumbing service" count as different categories.
- No listing edits and no ranking or map-pack claims. A competitor using a category as primary doesn't mean it fits your business.
- The comparison runs in your browser. The app says nothing is uploaded or stored.
FAQ
- Does MapGap tell me what my primary category should be?
- No. It shows which competitor primary categories you don't list. Choosing your primary category is up to you.
- How many competitors can I compare?
- Up to five per run.
